Finding a place to live in New Zealand
Renting
Renting is a popular option for people when they first arrive. It gives you a chance to spend some time exploring and getting to know the area you're in. If you're looking to buy, renting gives you the chance to get to grips with what is happening in the market before committing to a purchase.
In New Zealand, most rental properties come unfurnished but some include whiteware (fridge, washing machine and drier). The landlord will usually state if these items are included in the advertisement.
A lot of rental properties are listed on-line. Website listings have the added advantage of having photos and allowing you to easily check the listings before you arrive in New Zealand. While it will be difficult to secure a property before you arrive, it is still a good idea to check the listings so you can get an idea of what is available in your price range.
Check the following websites for listings:
Bond
You will be asked to a pay a bond before moving into your new property. This is generally 2-4 weeks rent and will be returned to you once your lease ends, minus the cost of any damages. In New Zealand, all tenancy bonds are held with the Department of Building and Housing who will pass your claim onto the Tenancy Tribunal if there are any disputes over the bond repayment.
